Jobs for Autumn Prune Roses
Garden Studio old hands have been asking me to remind them what to do in the garden now, so its time for a few posts about what has been going on here: firstly Pruning Climbing and Rambling roses.
Climbers and ramblers can put on several feet in a season. The aim of pruning is to cut out dead diseased and damaged shoots, and to bring the vigorous shoots as near as possible to horizontal. This will allow new flowering shoots to grow at all levels of the plant, so you get lots of visible flowers rather than just a few waving about at the top.
So, cut out the ddd (dead diseased and damaged) choose the best new vigorous shoots and tie them in sideways, using a figure of eight with string or soft tie (and never just shoving them behind a wire and hoping for more time next week...)
When you have a lovely fan shape against a wall, or up a pergola, you can then prune all shoots off these main stems back to two or three buds to encourage flowers.

Also called White Turtlehead. A fast spreading perennial, reaching a maximum height of 7 x 3 ( averaging 4 ) feet, that is native to North America; from Manitoba to Newfoundland; south to Missouri to Mississippi to Georgia. The stout rootsystem forms large patches.
The attractive foliage is glossy deep green.
The pale pinkish-white, snapdragon-like flowers, up to 1 inch in length, are borne in clusters up to 2 inches, mid summer into early autumn. The flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
Hardy zones 3 to 7 in full sun to partial shade on acidic, moist to boggy soil. It is not tolerant of dry soils. May be prone to powdery mildew on sites without good air circulation. Deer resistant. Propagation is from seed or division.

Black Ace
Rapid growing with blackish-green foliage and blackish stems contrasting with white flowers. It is otherwise very similar to the species.
Chelone lyonii
A fast spreading, upright perennial, reaching a maximum size of 4 x 4 feet, that is native to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Tennessee and the Carolinas.
The leaves, up to 7 inches in length, are glossy green.
The rose-pink ( with yellow beard ) flowers, up to 1 inch in length, are borne during summer, peaking during August, lasting well into autumn.
Hardy zones 3 to 7 in full sun to partial shade on deep, moist to boggy soil.
Excellent for planting on wooded floodplains.

Hardy zones 3 to 7 in full sun to partial shade on deep, fertile, moist to boggy soils.
Deer resistant.
